In a season one episode of The Big Bang Theory, Leonard's mother, a psychologist, makes an observation that people in the performing arts (like Penny, an actor) can suffer from an 'external locus of identity' where their whole identity is taken from bits of identities of the people around them.

...I just changed 'locus' to 'locust' because it was a fun image.
